Voice typing on Android: talk instead of typing in any app

Voice typing · 2 min read ·

Thumb-typing a long message is slow, and your phone’s built-in mic usually hands you a wall of unpunctuated text with every “um” and “you know” left in. So you end up editing it anyway.

Voice typing should just give you clean, finished text. Here’s how to get that on Android — in any app.

What voice typing with Hearless does

You tap a mic, you talk, and your words are typed into the field, cleaned up:

  • Filler words removed (“um”, “uh”, “matlab”, “like”).
  • Stutters and false starts dropped.
  • Punctuation and capitalisation added.

So “um so like, can you — can you send me the address” becomes “Can you send me the address?” — ready to send.

How to set it up (once)

  1. Install Hearless and open it.
  2. Turn on Hearless Voice Typing in your phone’s Accessibility settings (the app walks you through it).
  3. From then on, tap any text field and the Hearless mic appears beside it.

How to use it (every time)

  1. Tap the text field — in WhatsApp, Notes, Gmail, anywhere.
  2. Tap the Hearless mic and talk.
  3. Tap the check mark. Your cleaned-up words are typed in.

Good to know

  • Any app, any text field — not just chat.
  • Roman script. Dictate Urdu, Hindi or Punjabi in Latin letters.
  • Private by default. The mic records only after you tap it; it never appears on password fields.
  • Up to five minutes per recording.

Who it’s for

Anyone who writes long messages on a phone: founders firing off updates, students drafting notes, anyone whose thumbs can’t keep up with their thoughts. Pair it with reading voice notes as text and you’ve replaced both halves of the typing problem — sending and receiving.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from my keyboard's mic?

Hearless cleans up what you say — removing 'um', stutters and false starts, and fixing punctuation — so the typed result reads like writing, not a raw transcript.

Does voice typing work in every app?

Yes, in any app with a text field — chat, notes, email, search. You turn it on once in your phone's Accessibility settings.

Can I dictate in Urdu or Hindi in Roman letters?

Yes. Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic, Bengali and Nepali can be typed in Roman (Latin) script.
