What is Roman Urdu — and why people type Urdu in English letters
Open any Pakistani group chat and you’ll see it: Urdu, but written in English letters. “Kya haal hai bhai, kal milte hain.” Nobody typed that in the Urdu script — they typed it the way it sounds, in the alphabet their keyboard defaults to.
That’s Roman Urdu, and for millions of people it’s the normal way to write Urdu every day.
So what exactly is Roman Urdu?
Roman Urdu is the Urdu language written with Latin (English) letters instead of the traditional Nastaliq script. The words and meaning are pure Urdu; only the alphabet changes.
- Nastaliq: اردو میں لکھا ہوا
- Roman Urdu: Urdu mein likha hua
There’s no single official spelling — people write phonetically — which is part of why it feels so natural in chat.
Why do people prefer it?
A few honest reasons:
- Keyboards. Most phones default to a Latin keyboard. Typing Nastaliq means switching keyboards and hunting for letters.
- Reading speed. Plenty of people speak Urdu fluently but, having studied in English-medium schools, read Latin letters faster than Nastaliq.
- Code-switching. Everyday Urdu is full of English words — “meeting,” “office,” “WhatsApp.” Roman Urdu lets both sit on the same line without switching scripts.
It’s the same story for Hinglish (Hindi in Latin letters) and Roman Punjabi.
Where voice notes come in
Here’s the catch: a voice note is spoken Urdu. If you want it as text in the script you actually read, you need transcription that can romanize — and most tools can’t. WhatsApp’s built-in transcripts don’t support Urdu at all, in either script.
Hearless transcribes an Urdu voice note and returns it in Roman script, close to how you’d type it yourself — with a one-tap switch back to Nastaliq. It handles the Urdu-English mix, too.
The short version
Roman Urdu isn’t “lazy” or “wrong” — it’s a practical writing system that fits how people actually use their phones. And now your voice notes can arrive in it too.
