Which languages does WhatsApp voice transcription support?
You turned on WhatsApp’s voice transcripts, long-pressed a voice note, and… the Transcribe option isn’t there. Or it is — but only for some messages. You’re not doing anything wrong. WhatsApp’s built-in transcription supports a surprisingly short list of languages, and the list is very different on Android and iPhone.
Here’s the honest picture, with where it falls short.
What WhatsApp supports (as of October 2026)
On Android, WhatsApp transcribes roughly five languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi. That’s it. If your phone and transcript language is anything else, you won’t see the option.
On iPhone (iOS 16+), the list is much longer — it adds French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Chinese and Arabic, with iOS 17 adding more (Dutch, Swedish, Thai and others).
Notably missing on every platform: Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Indonesian, Vietnamese and several others — languages spoken by hundreds of millions of WhatsApp users.
The two biggest gaps
- German on Android. German is supported on iPhone, but not on Android. If you’re on an Android phone in a German-speaking country, the built-in feature simply won’t transcribe your voice notes.
- Urdu and Punjabi, anywhere. Neither is on WhatsApp’s list on any device. Hindi made it; Urdu and Punjabi didn’t.
How to read a voice note WhatsApp can’t
If your language isn’t on WhatsApp’s list, a dedicated app picks up where it stops. Hearless transcribes 60 languages — including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, German, Arabic and Bengali — and can return Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi in Roman (Latin) script if you read that more easily.
The flow is the same as WhatsApp’s share menu: long-press the note, tap Share, choose Hearless, and read the text in seconds.
Which should you use?
- Your language is on WhatsApp’s list (and you only read WhatsApp messages): the built-in feature is free and on-device — use it.
- Your language isn’t supported, or you want Roman script or to transcribe audio files too: a dedicated app like Hearless does more. See the full, sourced WhatsApp vs Hearless comparison.
Sources & accuracy: WhatsApp’s supported-language details come from WhatsApp’s Help Center and launch reporting (TechCrunch, Nov 2024). WhatsApp does not publish a per-language list for Android, so the Android specifics draw on third-party coverage and are dated above. We re-check this quarterly.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp transcribe voice notes in every language?
No. On Android it supports only a handful of languages, and several widely spoken ones — including Urdu and Punjabi — aren't supported on any platform.
Why don't I see the transcribe option in my language?
If your transcript language isn't supported on your device, WhatsApp hides the option. Android supports far fewer languages than iPhone.
How can I read a voice note in an unsupported language?
Use a dedicated app. Hearless transcribes 60 languages, including Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, German and Arabic, and can return them in Roman script.
